Current Research
My research focuses on trade union activities in the industrial sector, with particular emphasis on their anti-establishment aspects in the end of the 20th century, drawing on an analysis of the dynamics of activist commitment and of the daily activities fostering the various levels of action.
My PhD thesis was published by Syllepse in 2003 under the title Syndicats, la nouvelle donne. Enquête sociologique au cœur d’un bassin industriel [Trade Unions, a New Deal. Investigating in the Heart of an Industrial Area]. My interest in labor law and my involvement in the field of social history then gradually led me to developing a sociohistorical approach which I have been using to revisit the different stages of the institutionalization of trade unions in relation with the setting up of collective labor rights and social policies. I then started articulating the dialectics between the institutional and subversive aspects of union activities. This in order to put forth an original analysis of the way their shapes and their content have evolved in the course of history (“Direct Action in France: A New Phase in Labor-capital Conflict”, Gall Gregor, New Forms and Expressions of Conflict at Work, Palgrave, 2013).
I am now considering extending my research to political behavior, in the broad sense of involvement in public life through various forms of social commitment, and I am paying particular attention to phenomena which can be observed in former industrial areas that have undergone some form of regeneration. This new perspective is a continuation of the European project called SPHERE (Space, Place and the Historical and contemporary articulations of regional, national and European identities through work and community in areas undergoing economic REstructuring and regeneration; 2008 – 2011) of which I was the French partner.
One of my contributions in this project was to involve the inhabitants of the studied territories in co-producing the research and disseminating its results, in partnership with history clubs and local memory societies. Simultaneously, discovering oral history marked a new step in the development of my research.
I am also developing other projects in a comparative perspective via a number of partnerships funded with support from the European Commission. I have recently been the French partner in the following projects: Social Dialogue and the Changing Role of Conciliation, Arbitration and Mediation Services in Europe (CAMS); Precarious work amongst students in Europe (PRECSTUDE). I currently coordinate the INTERNSTAGE project (Internships, work placements, volunteering: stages on the road to decent work or to insecurity?).
My teaching mainly consists in tutoring PhD students on trade union activities and the mutations of labor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of London Metropolitan University.

- Exposition. « Restructurations Economiques et Identités territoriales », 30 panneaux (160 x 80) explorant l’évolution des identités territoriales, professionnelles et de classe dans six régions marquées par les restructurations de leur tissu économique en Allemagne, en Espagne, en France, en Grande-Bretagne, en Pologne et en Turquie. Cette exposition rend compte des travaux réalisés dans le cadre du projet de recherches européen SPHERE. Elle a bénéficié d’un soutien du Conseil Général de l’Essonne et est accompagnée d’un livret pédagogique (Odile Nave, 70 pages). Traduite en Anglais et en Espagnol. En France (Essonne) : 2500 visiteurs dont 500 scolaires. En Angleterre: exposée à titre permanent dans les locaux de la Faculté de sciences humaines et sociales de la London

- Exposition. « Restructurations Economiques et Identités territoriales », 30 panneaux (160 x 80) explorant l’évolution des identités territoriales, professionnelles et de classe dans six régions marquées par les restructurations de leur tissu économique en Allemagne, en Espagne, en France, en Grande-Bretagne, en Pologne et en Turquie. Cette exposition rend compte des travaux réalisés dans le cadre du projet de recherches européen SPHERE. Elle a bénéficié d’un soutien du Conseil Général de l’Essonne et est accompagnée d’un livret pédagogique (Odile Nave, 70 pages). Traduite en Anglais et en Espagnol. En France (Essonne) : 2500 visiteurs dont 500 scolaires. En Angleterre: exposée à titre permanent dans les locaux de la Faculté de sciences humaines et sociales de la London
Metropolitan University.

- Guide de visite « Mutations industrielles et paysages urbains, Guide de visite de la région de Corbeil-Essonnes - Evry » (20 pages). Guide de visite réalisé dans le cadre du projet SPHERE, retraçant l’évolution des paysages urbains et l’histoire des principales industries de la région. 5 visites guidées organisées de 2010 à 2013 pour différentes institutions (Agglomération d’Evry, Maison de Banlieue et d’Architecture d’Athis-Mons, Conseil général de l’Essonne), environ 150 visiteurs.
